Greg Young

Greg Young is one of Arts Unbound's students at Universal Institute.  Greg wrote a poem called "Heaven" which was a winning entry at the 2007 VSA Arts of New Jersey Wordsmith Competition.  Holly Scalera and Jocelyn Bates are his poetry teachers.

In May 2008, Greg was honored at a Universal Institute ceremony, where he was officially presented with a Governor's Proclamation by the Honorable Former First Lady, Mrs. Mary Jo Codey.

Greg's winning poem is presented below:

HEAVEN

WELL, I MADE IT TO HEAVEN

BUT I LEFT MY WALLET IN MY OTHER PANTS

THE BOUNCER SAID I COULDN'T GO IN

WITHOUT SOME PROPER I.D.

TO PROVE I WAS ON THE GUEST LIST

SO I HAD TO GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO EARTH

AND WOULDN'T YOU KNOW

MY SISTER ALREADY GAVE ALL MY CLOTHES

TO THE SALVATION ARMY

NEEDLESS TO SAY I COULDN'T FIND MY DRIVER'S LICENSE,

MY PASSPORT, OR EITHER OF MY CREDIT CARDS FOR THAT MATTER

SO I WENT TO THE VILLAGE

AND DOWN ON CHRISTOPHER STREET

THERE WAS A STORE THAT MADE PHONEY COLLEGE I.D.S

I GOT ONE WITH MY OWN NAME THAT SAYS

I GO TO FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY

HEY IT'S BETTER THAN NOTHING

WHEN I GOT BACK TO HEAVEN

THEY HAD STARTED CHARGING FIVE BUCKS TO GET IN

ON ACCOUNT OF SOME REALLY GOOD COVER BAND WAS GONNA

START PLAYING AT 11.

FORTUNATELY I HAD A LITTLE CASH ON ME

AND I MADE IT IN

NOW, I SAID TO MYSELF,

WHEN DO I GET TO MEET GROUCH
O MARX?
